In this installment, we are going to talk about RV roof maintenance, or should I should I say , lack of roof maintenance. The roofing system of your RV is one of the most important components but yet I am finding it it is also the most neglected. Most people do not realize how hard the elements are on your roofing system. Imagine, the sun blares down on your roof every single day relentlessly and during the hot summer months, this can take a toll on your roofs integrity. The temperature changes from day to night can be extreme and this expansion and contraction can cause small leaks to develop. At first, you might not even notice them but that slow water seepage through those small cracks could be damaging your RV. Over time, the cracks gets larger until water actually starts to enter the RV. By this time, there is too much damage and the fix is no longer just sealing the cracks. Unfortunately, I am finding that very few folks look at their roofs until there is a major problem.
Even if you have a new RV, you have to take into consideration how long the unit sat on the lot before you took it home. A roof can start to crack in as little as 6 months. This is especially true in the South East where the sun’s rays are much stronger. The remedy is simple. Either go up on top of your RV and check the roof yourself or hire a professional to do it for you. A pro will check your roof your cracks or other issues and document them on camera so the issues can be discussed with the customer.
I know from our own experience that even right from the factory, there can be roof defects. Our entire front cap separated one day due to one of those defects. The roof actually separated and left a gaping crack. This was from effects of the sun and the wrong screws being used from the factory. So please, check your roof, even if you have a new unit. New is no guarantee that it is OK.
