When you live in an RV, following the weather becomes extremely crucial. Strong winds from downdrafts and funnel clouds can cause major damage to a camper or RV. Before a storm hits, be sure you do not have your awning open as the strong winds will take it out. In addition, you should never stay in your camper or RV during a severe storm. If a strong wind gust hits the side of the RV or camper just right, the unit could flip or roll. In addition, an RV is no match for a falling tree. I have seen many campers crushed when a large tree falls and hits the coach. That is why is so important to seek safe shelter during a storm. If you are in a park, the bathroom area will often offer substantial shelter as they are usually made from cinder blocks.
During the summer, storms can come very quickly so you need to know the weather forecast well ahead of time. Always have an escape plan so you can get to safety very quickly if need be. If you leave your coach to go shopping, pull in your awning so if a fast-moving storm does move through, you will not lose it. Choose your parking spaces carefully and try not to get next to large trees or be near areas that could easily flood. Be sure you know what limitations your RV insurance has and know what is covered and not covered. Review this before you go on your trip so if you have to make any adjustments you can do so.
If you do suffer damage after a storm, be sure to document it with pictures. File your insurance claim as soon as possible as it might take time for an adjuster to get out to you, especially if there has been widespread damage.
In review, simply be ready and have a plan in case bad weather comes your way. Remember that the RV can be replaced but your life cannot.
